Literary
A collection of literary papers of Amanda Lohrey, created principally during the 1980s. The collection consists of drafts, especially several drafts and manuscripts of The Reading Group (1988). The collection also includes drafts of other material, notebooks, research files, media clippings. There are also files of correspondence, media clippings and related documents connected with the libel action levelled against The Reading Group in 1989.

Amanda Lohrey is an Australian writer, novelist and academic. A graduate of the University of Tasmania, Lohrey worked as a researcher for several years before an appointment in writing and textual studies at the University of Technology Sydney from 1988 - 1994. She was appointed lecturer in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at the University of Queensland in 2002, and most recently joined the Australian National University as a visiting fellow in 2016.
She published her first novel, The Morality of Gentlemen in 1984. Her second, The Reading Group (1988), was threatened by defamation action by a Tasmanian senator. The case was settled out of court, including the pulping of 1000 unsold copies. The Reading Group was later reissued.
Since then, she has published the novels Camille’s Bread (1995), The Philosopher’s Doll (2004), Vertigo (2008), A Short History of Richard Kline (2015). In 2010, she published an anthology of short fiction, Reading Madame Bovary. She has also published essays in several publications, including Quarterly Essay, The Monthly, and Hecate.
Lohrey has received a number of awards for her work, including the 1996 Australian Literature Society Gold Medal for and the 1996 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Camille’s Bread, the 2011 Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for Reading Madame Bovary. In 2012, Amanda Lohrey was given the Patrick White Award.
